December 29, 1958 — November 24, 2025

Silver Bay

Allen Ellefson, 66, of Silver Bay went to his heavenly home at sunrise on Monday, November 24th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Allen was born in Owatonna, Minnesota on December 29th, 1958. His family moved to Babbitt when he was a young child. After graduation he went to work for the Reserve Mining Company Railroad. In 1982 he transferred to Silver Bay where he met the love of his life, Heidi. They raised two sons, Cole and Tyler, who were his pride and joy. His appreciation for the North Shore grew through his work for Crosby Manitou and Tettegouche State Park before returning to the railroad at Northshore Mining.

Al loved life! He never stopped learning or creating something new. He loved trains, planes, and a view of the sky both night and day. He loved music and spent many hours playing his guitar. He and Heidi retired in 2019 and were able to enjoy the last few years doing what they love – hiking to scenic overlooks, date night sunsets, and coffee on the deck.

As Al would remind us, “Don’t be sad that it’s over – be glad that it happened”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Virginia; Brother Charlie; sister-in-law Holly; brother-in-law Larry.

Al is survived by his wife of 43 years, Heidi; Sons Cole (Sarah) and Tyler; Grandson Finn; Brothers Doug, Brian (Kelly), Rob (Tammy); Sisters, Barb, Nancy, Lynne. Father and mother-in-law Ron and Ruby; Sister in law Tracy (David). As well as many beloved nephews and nieces.

A celebration of life will be held at the Clair Nelson Center in Finland, Minnesota on Saturday December 6th from 11am to 2pm.
