Grand Marais

Carol Berglund, 94, of Grand Marais died Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born on September 14, 1931 to Christian and Agnes (Blomberg) Rude in Duluth and grew up just east of Cascade. After her marriage to Alton Berglund in 1951, they made they home on the farm. Carol worked as an aide and later an LPN at the Cook County Hospital.

Carol was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its quilting guild.

The farm was a special place to both Carol and Alton. Carol loved feeding the wildlife and watching many animals outside the windows. She always had a hot meal on the table for Alton and the boys when they were working in the fields or woods and dinner was always eaten together at the table. She was an amazing cook and baker, her specialty chocolate chips cookies will be remembered but never replicated.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alton; sisters, Thelma Peterson, Alice Brisson, Shirley Ellquist, and brothers, Jerry (Nancy) Rude, and Bradley (Sandy) Rude.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Dr. Kevin) Krause; sons, Brian and Kevin (Sharon) Berglund; grandchildren, Collin, Bjorn (Jennifer), Brock, and Brittany (John); 7 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Hazel McClanahan; a brother-in-law, Clifford (Julie) Berglund and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.
