Dorothy Devitt

Dorothy Ann Devitt was born on 8 May 1924 to John J., Sr. and Anna (Hodul) Karney in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago's south side where she grew to young womanhood. She attended the Van Vlissingen Elementary School and graduated from Fenger High School in 1942. Right after graduation she married her high school sweetheart, R. William Joseph. The couple had two sons: William (1943) and James (1956).

In 1964, Dorothy married Russell Marks. They made their home in Country Club Hills, IL and later in rural Lockport, IL. After Russell's death in 1986, Dorothy moved to Orland Hills, IL. She married Donald Devitt on 19 December 1991. After his death in March 2007 she continued to live in Orland Hills until she was diagnosed with lung cancer. In January of 2009 she moved to Two Harbors, MN to be near her son and his family. She lived in Bayview Apartments until her death on Sunday, 19 September 2010.

Dorothy worked for Acme Steel in Riverdale, IL until her retirement in 1989. She loved square dancing and traveled extensively with her third husband, Donald dancing in many states. She was a member of Living Waters Fellowship and Holy Spirit Catholic Parish, both of Two Harbors.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, and four brothers- John Jr., William, Edward, and George.

Those privileged to have shared her life include: her sons- Commander William (Petra) Joseph, US Navy retired of Woodbridge, VA and Rev. James (Rev. Barbara) Joseph of Two Harbors, MN; 5 grand children- Jennifer (Phillip) Jewell, Stephanie Joseph, Katrina Joseph, Christopher (Jordan) Joseph, and Katherine Joseph; 3 great granddaughters- Mackenzie Joseph, McKenna Jewell, and Aubrynn Joseph.

Also surviving are her cousins- Drs. Andrew and Evelyn Carney and Dr. Theodore Carney; special friends- Evelyn Lauletta and Bernice Pocius; her Goddaughters- Barbara Karney Laban and Kathleen Pocius McDermott; several nieces and nephews; and her Step Children- Thomas Devitt, Colleen (Jurgis) Karusa, Maureen Brock, Erin (John) Rivera, Donna Tabisz, Sean (Michelle) Devitt; 13 Step Grandchildren; and 2 Step Great-Grand Children.

Services will be held at Living Waters Fellowship on Friday, 24 September 2010 at 6pm with supper following in the fellowship hall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, 25 September at 10am in Holy Spirit Catholic Church with refreshments following. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services. Her cremains will be transported at a later date for a memorial service and internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Worth, IL.
