Gladys Dockan

Gladys Mae Dockan, 89, Grand Marais, MN, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at North Shore Health, Grand Marais, MN.

Gladys was born January 7, 1928, to Adolph and Celia (Johnson) Everson, at the family home on Maple Hill, Grand Marais, MN.  She attended school on Maple Hill and graduated from Cook County High School in 1945.  Gladys waitressed at Mabel’s Cafe, where she met George (Whitey) Dockan and they were married November 8, 1950.   She also worked at the East Bay Hotel, Municipal Lounge, The Cove, and was manager at the Senior Citizen Center.  She also enjoyed volunteering for 20 years as a hairdresser at the North Shore Care Center.

In her younger years, she truly loved music within her family.  She played guitar, accordion, piano and absolutely loved to sing and dance, especially with Whitey.  Together they enjoyed league bowling, camping and spending time with family and friends.  Gladys cherished her time spent volunteering with the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Quilters and Altar Guild.  She was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion Post 413 and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  Gladys and Whitey wintered for 17 years in Apache Junction, AZ, where they made many, many friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Whitey; parents Adolph and Celia; infant sister Ruth; sister Dorothy; brothers Oscar, Lloyd, Gerald and Harry.

Gladys is survived by sons Jerry (Bonnie), Mt. Pleasant, TX; Clifford Berglund (Julie), Grand Marais, MN; Gary (Claire) Argyle, TX; Rodney (Carah), Grand Marais, MN; Steven (Belinda), Pasadena, TX; brother Wally (Sandra) Everson, Grand Marais, MN; sisters Anna Speck, Grand Marais, MN; and Helen Nelson, Cloquet, MN; several grand and great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM, Service Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.

A private burial will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, with family members at a later date.
