Kyle John Nelson, 59, of Lutsen, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 5, 2026, while doing what he loved most: playing a round of golf at Superior National.
Kyle was born on April 28, 1967, to Lloyd and Betty Nelson of Lutsen, where he was raised and lived his entire life. True to the Nelson family tradition, Kyle was a gifted athlete who excelled in all sports. A proud graduate of Birch Grove Elementary, he went on to graduate from Cook County High School in 1985. Following high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Superior, where he played college football. Kyle built a career grounded in a strong work ethic, retiring in July 2025 after nearly 25 years at Minnesota Power.
The true light of his life arrived on his 21st birthday with the birth of his daughter, Jess, a special, shared connection he held dear throughout his life. Later, his world expanded again with his grandson, Barrett Lloyd, who carried his father's namesake. Kyle was immensely proud of Bear and cherished every opportunity to cheer him on at all his activities.
Kyle was a fierce competitor and a passionate Minnesota sports fan. He bled purple for the Minnesota Vikings and faithfully followed the Minnesota Twins, while holding a fiery, lifelong hatred for the Green Bay Packers. The NFL Draft was sacred to Kyle; he routinely took special vacation days each spring so he could watch every pick undisturbed.
When he was not watching sports or on the golf course, Kyle could often be found working on his house, splitting wood, or spending time with animals, especially dogs. Having retired in July 2025, Kyle was settling smoothly into retirement, looking forward to endless rounds of golf, extra quality time with Jess and Barrett, dog-sitting his grandpups, and long, legendary bonfires with Diane and close friends.
Kyle was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Nelson; his siblings, Gunner, Todd, and Lisa; his paternal grandparents, Harold and Helen Nelson; his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Joyce Herold; and his beloved dog, Sambo.
He is survived by his daughter, Jess (Nolan) Chenevert; his cherished grandson, Barrett Lloyd; his mother, Betty Nelson; his sisters, Lori (Rob) and Kristi; his longtime girlfriend, Diane Blanchette; his nephews, Rio and Riley; his nieces, Nicola and Haley; a grandnephew and several grandnieces; and many cherished friends and classmates.
A public celebration of life gathering will take place at the Superior National Golf Course Clubhouse on Sunday, October 18th at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Kyle’s memory are preferred to Birch Grove Community School at: https://www.birchgroveschool.com/donate
