Larry Holmes, 85, of Two Harbors, died Friday August 24, 2018 at home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with ALS.
Larry was born August 18, 1933 to Merle “Jack” and Ella (Patterson) Holmes in Two Harbors where he was a lifelong resident. After graduating from high school in 1951, Larry went to work at Agate City Auto Body. He served in the US Army from 1954-1956 in Germany. Returning to Two Harbors, he opened Larry’s Auto Body which he operated until age 82. Over the years, he also worked for the DM&IR Railroad, Bob Grenner Auto Body in Duluth, and Sonju Motors.
Larry was a member of the Lions Club, Loyal Order of Moose, Minnesota Gold Wings, Arrowhead Blacksmiths, and a Charter member of the Voyaguer Snowmobile Club.
While raising his family, Larry enjoyed camping and hunting. In later years, He and Arlene enjoyed traveling the US in their motorhome and Gold Wing.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Jr.; grandson, Aaron Holmes; and son-in-law Tom Hayes.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughters, Laurie (Ron) Juenemann, Terri Hayes; son, Arlan (Laurie) Holmes; grandchildren Cliff, Julie, Andrew, Daniel, Callie, Ariana, and Arelia; 6 great-grandchildren; and 3 AFS grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 PM until the 2 PM funeral service on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.
