Martha Hoven 89, Two Harbors, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Friday, May 1, 2026. She is now at her eternal home with her Lord Jesus.
Martha was born November 15, 1936 to Alfred and Elsie (Lonergan) Hugstad in Kasson, MN. She grew up in Vernon Township, where her father managed the Co-op Creamery, and later Northfield, where her father managed Kraft Foods during WWII. Kraft Foods supplied dried milk, butter and cheese to military troops and the general population. Later the family moved to Zumbrota, where her father operated his own business.
Martha played piano very well, and played by ear by age four. During high school, she played drums in the school band and sang in small groups. While attending St. Olaf College she learned to play pipe organ, and earned a BS degree in Business Education. She married David Hoven on July 31, 1960 and taught in Postville, Iowa. They moved to Waterloo, IA, Kansas City, MO, St. Joseph, MI, Lancaster, PA, Wapakoneta, OH, and lastly, in 1981, to Two Harbors. During these years, Martha taught high school, community college, was a corporate secretary, church organist, and helped her daughter and son-in-law at the Anderson’s Greenhouse annual Christmas open house.
Martha was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and its Piecemakers Quilting Group, and the Northstar Quilters. She served as a co-chair of the Lake County Republican Party, and worked with Friends of the Library. As an active member of her community, she drove various athletic teams, and in her earlier years, typed the entire Dewey Decimal System for two schools.
She enjoyed reading, quilting, shoveling snow and mowing her lawn.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Hoven; a grandson, Zachary Shogren; brothers, David and James Hugstad; and sister, Mary Monson.
She is survived by her children, Matt (Nadine) Hoven, Jenny (Jim) Shogren, Jon (Lee Ann) Hoven; grandchildren, Krissy (Alex) Cuzzo, Evan Shogren, Ben (Eva) Hoven, Katie Lee Hoven, Eva (Mike) Vogel, and Elizabeth Hoven; great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Emma Hoven, and two more coming soon; brother, Paul (Wendy) Hugstad; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jim Hanson.
Memorials are preferred to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Two Harbors Public Library.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Saturday May 16, 2026 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery.
