Robert E. Nikolai, 84, Finland died Sunday, November 21, 2021 at his home.
Bob was born in Two Harbors on September 15, 1937 to Erwin E. and Mary (Kalender) Nikolai. A life-long resident of Finland, Bob attended 1st thru 8th grade in Finland, then high school in Two Harbors, graduating in 1955. In 1956 he went to work in the power plant at the newly-opened Reserve Mining Company in Silver Bay, retiring as power plant superintendent from Northshore Mining Company in 1999. Bob also was caretaker of the Crystal Bay Cemetery for 60 years and served 51 years as a the State Fire Warden.
He was a member of the Baptism River Community Church, and served on the boards of the Finland Historical Society and Cooperative Light and Power Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and life on his farm. Bob was appreciated for his selfless service to his community and others.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Anne Striker.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda; a daughter, Gayle Nikolai; a son, Gary Nikolai; a sister, Verna (Jim) Sinderman; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
