Scott A Ness

December 21, 1962 — January 4, 2026

Silver Bay

Scott passed away peacefully at home on January 4, 2026, he was 63 years old.

Scott was born on December 21, 1962, to Owen and Louise Ness. He grew up in Silver Bay and graduated in 1980.

After graduation, he went to work in the Twin Cities at Milltronics, later returning north to work at the Holiday Station in Beaver Bay, Lutsen Mountains, and the Minnesota Veterans Home, retiring in 2024.

Scott had a love for old-time rock and roll music (a big Beatles fan) and was a self-taught musician who played the guitar, banjo, and drums. He enjoyed music, hunting, camping, fishing, agate picking (sharing his collection with family and friends), spending time with family, and so much more.

He was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan and also followed the Minnesota North Stars, later the Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Twins. He enjoyed watching the State Hockey Tournaments every year and also played hockey in his youth.

Family was an important part of Scott’s life. He spent 16 happy years with the love of his life, Jody. He loved his nieces and nephews and all of their children and enjoyed attending their sporting activities throughout the years, being one of their biggest fans.

Scott is survived by his fiancée, Jody (Kunkel); siblings Steven of Duluth, Mark (Margy) of Silver Bay, Cheryl (Jim) Esterbrooks of Knife River, and Tracy (Jerry) Halvorson of Silver Bay. Also many friends and extended family.

Nieces and nephews: Brandon (Deeanna) Ness, Clinton (Lucy) Ness, Brita Ness, Lindsay (Tracy) Pearson, Mitchell Ness (Mari), Jenny (Nick) Bjerken, Dustin (Tina) Goutermont, Desiree Halvorson, and Tanner Halvorson (Jess Newman). Great-nieces and great-nephews: Sidney, Cooper, Pricilla, Owen, Damian, Callie, Rory, Riley, Reylin, Lillian, Tucker, Levi, Willa, Gordon, and Brooklyn.

Preceding him in death were his father, Owen (2007); his mother, Louise (2017); and an infant brother, Bruce (1956).

We would like to thank the staff at the Mayo Clinic and Aspirus of Duluth for the care he received over the years.

Scott will be remembered for his gentleness, good manners, and deep love for his family. He was a wonderful son, brother, and uncle. He will be missed greatly, but we will not say goodbye—we will say, “Love you and see you later.” Hugs and love to you always, Scotty. You will forever be in our hearts. XO

A private family burial service will be held in the spring.
