Shirley O Moorehouse

October 15, 1926 — November 21, 2023

Spooner

Shirley Moorehouse, 97, passed away peacefully with her daughter and son-in-law by her side on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, Wisconsin.

Shirley was born in 1926 to Walter and Eleanora (Krause) Glaser in Chicago, Illinois.  The family made their home in Riverside, Illinois where Shirley lived with her parents and older brother, Wally.  She graduated from Riverside Brookfield High School in 1944 and worked at Marshall Fields & Co. after graduation.  She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Riverside and met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Moorehouse, in the choir at church.  Needing extra choir members for a program, Richard joined her choir from his church in Chicago.  He sat behind Shirley in the choir and the rest was history.  They were married in 1946 after Dick returned from the Army WWII.  They moved to North Riverside and had one daughter, Joan.  Eleanora Glaser “Nonnie” also lived with them after her husband Walter died at the age of 45.

Shirley was employed by Ford Motor Company as a cashier, in billing and payroll for 16 years in the Chicago suburbs.  She also worked for C & C Foods as a cashier.   In 1980, Shirley and Dick moved to Springbrook, Wisconsin where Shirley worked for U.S. Forest Service in Hayward, WI. for 5 years until retirement.  They lived near to her daughter and family and spent a lot of fun time with their two grandchildren at their lake home. Shirley’s family was always the highlight of her life.

In 1989, Shirley and Dick moved to Two Harbors, MN. to be nearer to their daughter and family.   They were married 44 years when Dick passed away.  Shirley later moved to Spooner, WI. where she lived independently at Goslin Courts for 19 years.

Over the years, Shirley was the family faithful “prayer warrior.”  She had attended Trego Community Church, WI. and First Baptist Church in Two Harbors.  She also attended Grace Lutheran Church services via television in her later years.  She read her daily devotionals and read the entire Bible.  She loved Jesus.  Shirley was a breast cancer survivor for 25 years.  Her cancer never returned.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard in 1991; and brother Wallace Glaser.

Shirley is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Joan (and “son”-in-law Peter) Wainer of Chippewa Falls, WI.; grandson Kale Wainer; granddaughter Kylie Wainer; and five great-grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Maple Ridge Care Center to the wonderful staff and excellent care given; St. Croix Hospice staff for the compassion, comfort and care given; and awesome neighbor and friend, Gloria, for all the kindness shown to Shirley and her family.  Also, Meals on Wheels, Faith in Action – Neighbor to Neighbor (Lori), and Economart grocery order and delivery for helping to keep my mom live independently. Much gratitude to Jerry and Alex Cavallin for their kindness, patience, and help.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Memorial donations for Shirley are preferred to St. Croix Hospice, 7755 3rd St. N, Suite 200, Oakdale, MN 55128 (checks payable to “Hospice Support Foundation”) or donate online at www.hospicesupportfoundation.org
