Virgil Hopkins

Virgil Hopkins, 72, Two Harbors, passed away Monday October 4, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. Virgil was born to George and Grace Hopkins on November 7, 1937 in River Falls, Wisconsin, and the family later moved to Two Harbors, where he grew up. After three years in the U. S. Army Security Agency, Virgil returned to Two Harbors and worked at Reserve Mining Company, while attending night school at UMD. He married Luanne Carlson on December 9, 1961, and in 1964 they moved to Maryland, where they raised their three sons. While working for the Metropolitan Police Department as a detective in criminal investigations, he attended American University. After retiring in 1984, Virgil was director of Security for Sheraton Corporation and later worked for the Watergate Complex. In 2009, Virgil and Luanne moved back to Two Harbors. He loved sending time with his family and friends at his Pequaywan Lake cabin. He had a strong love for the great outdoors and animals. He also loved to golf and travel with his wife. His great sense of humor and generous spirit would ultimately define him, enjoying life-long bonds with his family, friends and co-workers. Virgil was a member of the Association of Retired Police Officers of the District of Columbia, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was preceded in death by his parents. Virgil is survived by his wife, Luanne; sons, Mark Hopkins of Myersville, MD, Christopher Hopkins and Richard Hopkins of Aurora, CO; a grandson, Justin Hopkins of Mt Airy, MD; a sister, Marilyn Courtney of Steens, MS; a niece, several nephews, brother and sisters-in-law. The entire Hopkins family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of their family and friends for loving Virgil and meeting all their needs. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the Two Harbors Animal Shelter. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the Noon Service on Saturday October 16, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.
