William H. “Bill” Mattila, 69, of Silver Bay, died Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.
Bill was born January, 5th 1957 to Walter and Evelyn (Nyquist) Mattila in Duluth. He grew up in Silver Bay, graduating from William Kelley High School in 1975. After over 20 years at Tettegouche State Park, he retired in 2018.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing, often with his dogs by his side. Bill had a curious mind and enjoyed studying maps, rock picking, reading, and watching the Vikings on Sunday. He had a nickname for everyone, and a knack for coming up with his own song lyrics.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Sandra McDonald and Dorothy Gill; and a brother, Alvin Mattila.
He is survived by his wife, Jody; children, Heather (Joe) DeJesus, Holly (Shawn) Jouppi, Luke (Sara) Mattila, Derek (Courtney) Mattila, Lacey (David) Shoen, Gina Viola (Jason DeRosia), Tanner (Dana) Viola, and Shay (Kyle) Powers; grandchildren, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Alivia, Evan, Dylan, Elliana, Brady, Soren, Kadence, Crosby, Korbyn, Kale, Brooks, Haas, and Vaughn; sisters, Carol Warrick, Dianna (Larry) Wicks, Sharon (Bob) Babbit; and brothers, Jon (Chris) Mattila, and Jim (Shelly) Mattila; and many nieces and nephews.
