Emmert Johnson

Two Harbors

Emmert Johnson, 97, of Two Harbors, died peacefully Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in St. Luke’s Hospice of Duluth.

Born on November 6, 1921 to John B. and Hannah (Falk) Johnson in Two Harbors where he was a life-long resident.

During World War 2, Emmert served his Country in the United States Air Force as a Sgt. specialized in aircraft development and maintenance.  After training in Florida and Oklahoma in 1942, he was dispatched to Michigan to work on the production of the B24 Bomber; then to Iceland where he maintained P38 Fighters; then ordered to England where he worked on the British Mosquito.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for his dedication to Country and Air Force.

After the war, Emmert returned home to marry his sweetheart, Dorothy Sandness, on July 6, 1946.    During their 67 years, they enjoyed their life together raising a family on the Silver Creek homestead and spending time at McDougal Lake with family.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards with family, and the occasional game of horseshoe/bocce ball.

Emmert worked for the City of Two Harbors for 37 years.  He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church; VFW; American Legion; Sons of Norway; and Lake County Historical Society.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy in 2013; brothers, Helmer, Walfred, Oscar, Emil, Edgar, and Enfred; sisters, Esther Wuorio,  Elyn Holter, Eva Lingren and son-in-law Gary Staples.

Emmert is survived by his children, Wayne (Karen) of Spokane WA, Carol Staples (Tony Goerdt) of Cherry MN, and David (Sharon) of Duluth; three grandchildren, Scott (Stacia) Staples, Katie Hoglund, Kori (Andy) Shepard; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Andrew Staples, Jack, Zachary and Aubrey Hoglund, Ella and Briggs Shepard; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Ecumen Scenic Shores Assisted Living, St. Luke’s Hospice, and Lake View Memorial Hospital for all their compassion, love, and support.

Visitation will be from 1 PM until the 2 PM service on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (601-4th Ave.) in Two Harbors.
