Fern A. Lovaas, 89, of Grand Marais, died Friday, January 14, 2022 at North Shore Care.
Fern was born September 21, 1932 to Andrew and Freda (Backlund) Shold on the family farm in Grand Marais. She married Kenneth D. Lovaas on July 13, 1951. Married for 66 years prior to Kenny’s death, Fern and Kenny built their home and lived with their children on the beautiful shore of Lake Superior. Fern was employed as a dental assistant and office manager in Grand Marais for over 40 years.
Fern was a member of Cornerstone Community Church and served as church organist for many years. She was kind, generous, and a gracious host to any newcomer to church or community. Fern was known for inviting people over for coffee and baked goods or a homemade meal. In her typical Swedish fashion, the coffee was always on. Fern’s home was filled with love, laughter, and a true desire to spread God’s word.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, traveling, her Monday night quilting group, and playing and teaching piano. Fern’s life revolved around her
devotion to and her love for her husband, children, grandchildren, family members, and friends. Her kind words, hugs, and prayers were given to all. Many who knew Fern were recipients of her handmade quilts, sweaters, mittens, and hats. A faithful follower of Christ, Fern read her Bible daily and strived to seek the Lord in all things.
Fern was proceeded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Kenny; brothers, Rueben, Lloyd, Lester, Roger, and David; sisters, Bernice Howard and Betty Brummer.
