Lloyd "Poika" Peterson

Two Harbors

Lloyd Peterson, 92, Two Harbors, died Monday, April 6, 2020 at Waterview Shores.

He was born March 20, 1928 to Charles and Inga (Stromme) in Two Harbors, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1947.  He was employed by the D M & I R Railroad until 1950, when he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served as a radio operator in Austria during the Korean War. After being discharged in 1952, he returned to the railroad and worked as a carman.  When “Black Friday” occurred in 1963 he was left unemployed.  Lloyd began college at UMD, and after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and later obtaining his Master’s degree he worked as an elementary teacher in the Two Harbors schools.  He retired in 1990 after 23 years of teaching.

Lloyd was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He especially enjoyed vacationing with his family, bowling, golfing, cards, and his coffee klatches.  Lloyd enjoyed winters in Las Vegas for many years with his wife, Marilyn.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Loyal Order of Moose, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 56 years, Marilyn; a sister, Ramona Peterson, two half-sisters, Alice Wickstrom and Hildur Sandvik; and in-laws, Margaret “Peg” Peterson and Connie (Al) Wangles.

Lloyd is survived by his sons, Brian (Laurie) of North Branch and Robert (Karen) of Minneapolis;  a daughter, Nancy (Rick) Kienzle of Island Lake; a brother, Raymond Peterson of Little Canada; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Kyle) Mullen, Ben (Erin) Peterson, Stacie (Sagar Tolaney) Peterson, Jenny Kienzle, Nikki Kienzle, Ted Jorstad, and Marie Peterson; great-grandchildren, Gabby and Danger Mullen; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a dear friend, Fran Magnuson.

Private graveside services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors. A memorial service will be held when circumstances allow at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.
