MARVIN L MAKI

May 8, 1933 ~ March 3, 2020 (age 86)

Obituary

Marvin L. Maki, 86, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, March 3, 2020 in Waterview Shores.

Marvin was born May 8, 1933 to Andrew and Tenie (Mattson) Maki in Aurora, Minnesota where he grew up and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from high school, he attended Virginia Junior College, then served in the U. S. Army, part of his time was spent in Alaska manning anti-aircraft posts.

Following his military service, Marvin completed his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Minnesota and there met Irene Haglund who he married in 1958. Marvin was employed by the Bureau of Land Management in Coos Bay, Oregon, then lived in Eveleth and Aurora, before moving to Two Harbors in the mid 1960’s. Marvin served as Lake County Land Commissioner for nearly thirty years, retiring in 1993.

Marvin was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he served as a Deacon and usher for many years, the American Legion and the American Forestry Association.

Marvin greatly enjoyed his time outdoors: watching and feeding birds, deer hunting, fishing, Lake Superior, and splitting wood at the cabin he built.  He loved polka music and was proud of being a sauna-loving Finn.

Marvin had regaling stories about his experiences in the woods, on the lakes, and as a young miner at Erie Taconite Plant. He orally recorded these recently and the Iron Range Historical Society has requested these recordings and the written transcripts.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Michael Maki.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene; sons, Dan (Ruth) and Andy (Ann); grandchildren; Nicholas and Alyson; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Marvin’s family appreciates the compassionate care he received at Waterview Shores. All of you are so nice!
