Obituary

Phillip A. Houle, 81, died unexpectedly on Monday, February 20, 2023 at home.

Phil was born to Ragnvald Jarl “RJ” and Hilja (Haveri) Houle on February 25, 1941 in Two Harbors. He grew up in Little Marais and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1958.  In 1961 he married Carolyn Swardstrom and together they made their home and raised their family in Silver Bay. He was employed by the Lake County Highway Department for 32 years, retiring as Supervisor in 1999.

Phil was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, 4-wheeling, and vintage cars, especially his ’56 Mercury- “Betty Boop”.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timmy; brothers, Roy, Arthur, John and Lloyd; and son-in-law, Ron Potter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn; a son, Brad (Sissy); a daughter, Jody (Bill) Mattila; grandchildren, Adam, Lacey (David), Gina (Jason), Marley (Cody), Tanner (Dana), and Shay (Kyle); four great-grandchildren, Kadence, Kale, Crosby, and Korbyn.

 A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Clair Nelson Center in Finland.  A potluck lunch will follow.
