Valerie Jeanne (MacCoy) Osbakken, 87 of Two Harbors passed away peacefully on June 30, 2020 after a long fight with dementia. She was born March 31, 1933 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to Ralph and Amelia MacCoy.
Val came from a large family with 10 kids. She met Jim Osbakken through a Wartime Romance magazine while he was serving with the Marines. They eventually connected and shortly later were married and resided in Two Harbors. Val worked as the Maintenance Technician at Agate Bay Apartments for many years.
At an early age, she was a professional figure skater and continued to skate recreationally for many years after. Jim got her interested in curling in the 70’s and she later earned three trips to Mixed National Championships after winning the MN State Play Downs. Much like Jim, her heart was in the local club where she volunteered MANY hours doing bingo at the old clubhouse, teaching the high school kids to curl, and running the kitchen.
Her first love was always for family. Hosting family reunions for the MacCoys from Canada to gather in Two Harbors, there was always some joke they played on each other over the years. Entertaining family at the Stone Lake cabin for many years, she had her rules and at the same time she had rewards. Val enjoyed having family around, and always made it fun for the kids and later the grandchildren.
Val is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim; brothers Stan MacCoy; Hugh MacCoy; Ken MacCoy; sisters, Carla Gilbert, Elaine Jacobson, Kathleen Pugsley, and Pauline Macintosh all of Canada.
She is survived and will be missed by her daughters, Debra (Jeff) McGregor, Laura (Rick) Goutermont; sons, Jay Osbakken, Rick (Judy) Osbakken; NANA’s loving grandchildren, Travis (Teresa) Kempffer, Scott Comrie; Alex (Brandon) Willemarck, Stephanie and Tyler McGregor, Courtney, Nick and Tricia Osbakken; great-grandchildren, Keifer Larson, Lucas and Whitney Kempffer; Ella Olson, Eli and Ethan Willemarck; a brother, Ray (Pook) MacCoy; a sister, Carol (Ray) Heller; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Due to restrictions a private service for family will be held at Cavallin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Val’s at alz.org.
